In a horrifying revelation, the refugee worker in charge of eight men who gang-raped a German tourist in Austria has made a statement blaming the victim for the crime. The unnamed refugee worker made a statement to the Austrian press that he believed the sentence the men got was too high.
He went further in a statement made off-camera and said the victim herself was responsible for what had happened by misleading the men or giving them the wrong signals.
The eight men were convicted of gang-raping the 28-year-old woman, whom four of them had met in a bar on New Year’s Eve in 2015. The woman, identified as Sabine K, had gone back with the men to an apartment where they had raped her with an additional four men. The eight men who were brought to trial were Iraqi asylum-seekers.
The aid worker was a guardian for the men involved in the crime and possibly made the statement out of defensiveness as he was given the task of helping them integrate into Austrian society. ‘The refugee guardians play a big role. They are like the teachers in a school.’ Another aid worker for refugees spoke of his dismay as his colleague’s dismissive attitude towards the crime. He said: ‘There are lots of people who have never experienced living in an open society. They come with questions – if the women here are totally open and if they can go out and drink coffee with women.’ He described how advised the men he taught to go out and drink a coffee to get to know a woman but always ‘show respect and keep their distance’.
At the beginning of the trial, the court was told how the victim was “blind drunk.” Prosecutors alleged she had was not drunk but had in fact been drugged unwillingly. One of the eight men charged with the brutal attack admitted to his involvement and sobbed in court, blaming the vodka he had been drinking that night. ‘I was really drunk,’ he said, and further admitted that he knew what he had done was wrong not only in Austria. “This act is a crime in Iraq,” he stated.
The DNA of six of the men was found either in or on the victim’s body but none of the others have confessed. The victim continues to struggle with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and has been unable to continue working.
